A decorative wall mirror incorporating period horse-harness elements. First half of the 20th century, circa 1920–1950, incorporating late 19th- to early 20th-century components
Constructed principally from a matched pair of authentic horse collars and enriched with pressed and cast metal mounts, this unusual mirror represents a striking example of Romanian sporting and country-house decorative taste. The principal harness elements, on structural and stylistic grounds, may be dated to the late 19th or early 20th century, whilst the composition in its present form was most likely conceived and assembled in the first half of the 20th century, circa 1920–1950.
The piece belongs to a distinctive tradition of decorative furnishings in which obsolete equestrian equipment was reimagined as highly theatrical interior ornament, particularly suited to hunting lodges, rural residences and sporting interiors. Its bold silhouette, robust materiality and decorative metal detailing give it a strong visual presence, whilst preserving the character and patina of the original harness elements.
On the information presently available, the mirror is associated with Romania and is reputed to have come from one of the hunting lodges later connected with Nicolae Ceaușescu. This provenance, however, remains to be confirmed by documentary or archival evidence and should, in the absence of such support, be regarded as traditional attribution rather than established fact.
A rare and characterful decorative object, of considerable interior appeal, notable both for its imaginative reuse of genuine period material and for its close affinity with the hunting-lodge aesthetic of 20th-century Romania.
